2008 Family Hunting Season
On November 28th thru 30th 2008 dad and me went hunting. We
went over by pincher creek. We
took the horses and packed in 6 miles ONE WAY. We each had one packhorse to
lead, it was pretty fun. We got there close to dark and we rode an hour and a
half to camp, then had to find a place to put the tent. It was quite the
adventure. The next morning we woke up early and rode our couple miles in the
dark to get to where we hunt IN THE DARK. We saw a doe and when closer and dad
claims he saw a monster whitetail buck. I never saw it but o well. So we tied
the horses up and went after it but it got away. So we went over the hill and
saw a smaller white tail and dad shot at it 3 times while I had to control 2
crazy horses. I didn’t get to see anything. But he missed all 3 times. He was
pretty disappointed. But we looked for blood anyway. No luck. While down there
I saw a little 3 or 4-point whitetail chasing a doe. So I jumped off and chased
him for a bit and finally got a chance to look at him broad side I might have
been able to shoot him but I decided not too. I probably should have now I
think about it cuz I didn’t get a whitetail this year. So I went back to dad
and we kept hunting. We sat at the top of this huge hill over looking I nice
big clearing. Dad was at one end, I was at the other. And then not 100 yards
below me I see this wolf trotting along. I was stoked. But I was like na, I’m
elk and deer hunting I wont shoot it. I just watched. After a minute or two I
decided I’d shoot it. So it finally stops for me, “I really think it was gods
will, cuz there is no reason why it should have stopped. I was too far away for
it to hear or smell me” So I sat on my bum and rested the ol’ girl (odd 6) on
my knee and shot (about 270) yards and hit it. I couldn’t believe it. It tried
to get up so I shot 2 more times. So dad comes and he said he’d watch it and
he’d shoot it if it tried to get up before I got down there. So I’m heading
down thru the trees. And I see it start to get up so I rest the 30-06 on a tree
and me and dad both shot. So I get about 30 yards from my wolf and I can still
see its belly breathe up and down every few seconds. But it doesn’t move at
all. I was pretty scared. So I’m afraid this thing is going to jump up and get
me if I get closer, so I throw my walky talky at it, one glove, and my hat. And
it didn’t move! But still kept breathing. So I turn my scope down low as it
goes and take the safety off and I start walking towards it “SWAT style” gun
up, ready to shoot. It was a rush! And it never moved, just blinked at me. So I
wait for dad to come down and he tells me to get a stick and wack it. I told
him he had to do it! I’d cover him with the ol’ odd 6 while he got close and
started beating it. We were in a frozen over swamp so the stick he got wasn’t
very hard, but he beat it on the head like 10 times and it still didn’t die so
he put the odd 6 to the back of her head and blew her skull half way across the
mountain. It was pretty sweet. For some stupid reason we both didn’t want to
skin it so we got on the horses, about to leave when I decided I’d at least cut
off its tail for a souvenir. And then finished the day hunting and not seeing
anything.
Jacilyn shot a nice 6 point Elk. Michael shot a wolf and a nice 5 point Elk. Jacilyn's scored gross 307 3/8 and net 287 7/8 and Michael's scored gross 271 1/8 and net 262 6/8.
Mike’s Bull Elk
In
2008 daddy and I went over by Pincher Creek to A7. We each rode a horse and
each had a packhorse and we had to ride 4 miles to camp in the dark and had to
set up camp in the dark. We finally got it all set up at 11:30pm then hit the
sack. We woke up at 5:30am and got everything ready because we had to ride 2
miles to get to where we were hunting. One night when we got back from hunting
we were getting the horses ready for the night and I noticed that Junior’s
halter was loose but I thought it would be ok so I left it and went to bed. We
decided to set our alarm earlier so we could get up in time to get to where we
wanted to be at day break. So the next morning I went to get him and he was
gone and so was dad’s horse which had on hobbles. So this put us behind on our
schedule. We finally caught Junior and saddled him and dad took off to go find
his horse because we figured Junior chased him off. Like an hour later dad
showed up with his horse it was about a mile away down the road. We finally get
everything ready and start heading to where we are going to hunt and on the way
we pass a mountain side where we are normally passing in complete darkness but
because we are behind there is light. There is a fork in the road and we
decided to take the left one. And I think I see something on this hillside, but
it turns out to be nothing and dad spots three bulls on the hillside 628 yards
away. And so we tie up the horses and start running over towards them. About
300 yards away at the bottom of the hill I hide behind trees and dad sits in
the open looking through his binoculars. One of the bulls looks back and stares
for a minute and I get very angry at dad and yell at him to get behind the
trees. The bulls then walked over the hill and dad decides to start walking
around the hill and I start running straight up after the bulls. So I get to
the top and I don’t see anything. Then out of no where I see two bulls about
10yards from the edge of the tree line. So I take a quick glance at the two and
decide which one is bigger. The one I chose had his butt towards me and so I
had to wait. He finally turned broad side after which seemed like an hour. So I
shot and I missed and he ran about 10 feet away from the edge of the trees for
some reason and he stops. So I
shoot again and he drops. After a second or two he gets up and starts running
across the clearing. I shot two more times while he was running but I lead him
by too much. Dad shot too and missed. Me and dad met up and went and looked for
blood. We didn’t see much blood so dad was being negative, whether he was
bleeding enough to get him. So we decided to go back and get the horses to give
him time to bleed out and die. We got the horses and tied them up and started
to follow a faint blood trail. Dad was the tracker while I was looking around
for him. So we get to a grove of trees and the snow ends so we get really
worried that we won’t be able to find the blood as easy. I look up and I see
him laying in the trees so I shoved dad out of the way and ran to him. He only
ran about 70yards and I hit him with a good lung shot.
